Balticon operates in the logistics and container industry, where reliable IT systems play an important role in supporting day-to-day operations.
During a period of organizational change within its IT department, the company needed an independent perspective on its technology, internal processes, and the way the team was structured and worked together.
Over the course of our two-month engagement, we conducted a comprehensive technology and process audit, covering both the existing IT solutions and the processes behind software development and maintenance. Our support also included recruitment activities aimed at strengthening the company’s IT structure.
2Challenge
Balticon was going through organizational changes within its IT department, including changes to the team structure and the distribution of responsibilities. This created a good opportunity to take a broader look at the entire IT environment and assess whether the existing ways of working and technology solutions were still aligned with the company’s current needs.The client needed an independent assessment that went beyond technology itself and covered the entire software delivery process, from team organization and communication to responsibilities, quality standards, code, architecture, infrastructure, and security. The audit needed to consider both the technical perspective and its impact on development speed, costs, and operational stability.The goal was to bring greater structure to key areas of IT, establish clear priorities, and provide actionable recommendations that could support future technology, process, and organizational decisions.
3Solution
We began the audit by developing a clear understanding of the business context and speaking with management, the IT team, and employees who use Balticon’s internal systems in their day-to-day work. We then reviewed both the way IT work was organized and delivered and the technical environment, including architecture, code, infrastructure, security, development, and deployment processes. This allowed us to combine a technical assessment with a broader evaluation of how the IT function operated.As part of the engagement, we also conducted code reviews of Balticon’s internal applications, assessed the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), and prepared recommendations for the future development of both the technology and the team’s ways of working. The audit findings were prioritized and presented to the client together with clear directions for the next steps.Our support extended beyond the audit itself. Our team also took an active role in the end-to-end recruitment process for a new Head of IT. Together with Balticon, we defined the key priorities, the ideal candidate profile, and the technical and interpersonal skills required for the role. From there, we managed the recruitment process, from in-depth HR interviews and candidate screening to technical interviews led by our Tech Lead.During the technical stage, we looked beyond technical knowledge and experience, assessing candidates’ management skills, their approach to real-world case scenarios, and the solutions they proposed. We also considered how well each candidate would fit the organization and the company’s way of working. The process resulted in Balticon hiring a candidate who successfully completed both our HR and technical assessment stages.As a result, the client gained a clearer, more structured view of its IT environment, a set of actionable recommendations, and a solid foundation for developing its technology, processes, and team in a way that better supports the needs of the business.
